How to access Outlook emails without PST file in Windows 10 / 8.1 / 8/7

If you are using the latest version of Windows OS, i.e., Windows 10, the following method will help you to open Outlook 2016 email files without PST files easily.

Follow the steps below to Access Emails Outlook 2016 without a PST File

Method 1: Using the built-in Open and Repair feature of the Scan PST tool

Scan PST is a default utility launched by Microsoft with each version of the MS office suite, which can be used to repair corrupt PST files automatically. It also has an option called ‘Open & Repair,’ which can be used for opening Outlook data files without a PST file. However, this option is not available in scanpst.exe comes with older versions of MS office.

To use the open & Repair feature of the scan PST tool, launch the command prompt in Windows 10/8.1/8 with administrative privileges and type the following commands:

C :\> cd “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Root\Office16” C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Root\Office16> “\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16” /repair Outlook.pst

Here, replace “Outlook.pst” with your personal PST file name. If you use Outlook 2016, then type outlook instead of” \Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16″.

Method 2: Using Outlook inbuilt File parser to access emails without PST file in Windows 10/8.1/8/7

Launch Outlook 2016. Go to the File menu, and select Account Settings. Click on the Data files tab and click the Repair mailbox button in the bottom right corner of the window.

This will open a new window where you can find two options, i.e., “Repair for this profile,” and “Repair all profiles.” Select either one; depending upon your requirement, press the start scan button to initiate the data file parsing process. If you are using Outlook 2016, then it’ll take some time to complete the parsing process as shown below:

This method can access Outlook 2010 without a pst file in any version of Windows, including Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8.1 8/10 / Server 2003/2008/2012, etc.

How to access Outlook emails without PST file in Windows XP using Outlook Add-in

Outlook Express Repair Tool is an advanced tool for repairing corrupt or damaged Outlook Express files. It can also recover emails from the DBX files created by an older version of Outlook like MS Outlook 2000, MS Outlook 2002 (XP), and MS outlook 2003.

To use this tool, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Download and install Outlook Express Repair software on your computer. Once installed, launch it as shown below:

Step 2: Click on the Mailbox repair option which you want to repair, i.e., Inbox, Outbox, Drafts, or any other mailbox as shown below:

Step 3: Now select the Outlook Express 6.0 mailbox file (.DBX) data file you want to access and press the Next button to start the DBX mailbox scan process.

On successful scanning, it’ll show you a list of all folders available in your DBX mailbox, along with the total number of emails in each folder, as shown below:

Step 4: Choose any desired mail item by clicking on it. It’ll open that email in reading mode (without loading the entire email into memory), where you can save that particular email or export all emails into PST/EML/MSG files format:

This method is also helpful when Windows 10 / 8.1 Mail app shows an “Unable to connect to this account” error message while adding an Outlook account in Windows 10/8.1 Mail app. If you are also facing the same issue, follow the steps below to fix this problem:

Note: You can also open DBX files in Outlook 2013, 2010, or 2007 without PST files using the above procedure.

Using Outlook 2016, you can directly import contacts into MS outlook by double-clicking on the desired DBX file or by the drag and drop method.

Once the file is imported into Outlook 2013 / 2010 / 2007 / Windows 10 Mail app, switch to view mode in the respective email client window to access emails without the pst file. This method will also help if MS Outlook says “Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the default mail profile” error message while adding a new account.

Conclusion

If you are using Outlook 2016, it’ll take some time to complete the parsing process. If you face any issues while following the above steps, do let us know through your comments.
