OLED Vs. QLED: Which One is Best For You

Gone are the days when TVs come with simple features and limited sources of entertainment. Nowadays, dozens of features and terminologies may get your wires crossed while buying a TV. For example, you should know about different TV resolutions and picture qualities, refresh rate, input/output ports, brightness, contrast level, colour range, operating system, and several other smart features like Alexa. For instance, let me admit that you know all the techy-terms mentioned above; would you be able to solve the conundrum of OLED vs QLED?

Having known all that terminology, you will still have to solve the puzzle of OLED and QLED yet. Here, we come up with all the information that may help you understand the differences between OLED and QLED whenever you buy a big screen TV. Let’s get started;

OLED vs QLED: Which one is better?

The battle between OLED and QLED is not new. Different TV brands have been part of this rivalry for many years. Before understanding the complete story, let it be crystal clear that both technologies enhance the picture quality.

Now first, understand what do these terms (OLED Vs. QLED) mean?

OLED: Organic Light Emitting Diode

QLED: Quantum-dot Light Emitting Diode

What is QLED?

QLED is a rebranding phrase by Samsung. In simple words, we can say that QLED TV is an improved form of old LCDs. Quantum dots filter nanoparticles placed in front of the backlight to improve colour saturation and brightness. Aside from Quantum Dots, there is no difference between old plasma LCDs and QLEDs.

What is OLED?

OLED- Organic Light Emitting Diode- is a newly introduced technology in the world of entertainment. The other name of the organic light-emitting diode is emissive display technology.

In OLED TVs, a carbon layer of tiny sub-pixels has been used. Every pixel can emit its light when an electric current is given to the pixels. It means no LCD backlight has been used in OLED. Moreover, each pixel gets turned off when needed, according to the movie’s scenes.

Turning off each pixel separately on-demand will give you infinite contrast and enhance the viewing experience.

OLED Vs. QLED: Brand Difference

First, let me start the story of this rivalry from its inception. In 2015, Samsung introduced Super UHD TVs; unfortunately, it couldn’t get the desired level of popularity. Later on, SUHD was branded as QLED. In a nutshell, we can say Samsung introduces QLED. However, TCL is also manufacturing QLED TVs.

On the flip side, the inventor of OLED TVs is LG. Sony and Panasonic are the other TV brands that started to manufacture OLED TVs in the recent past.

Therefore, if you’re a brand-oriented person, take your decision according to the mentioned brands of both types of TV technologies.

Brightness:

Brightness plays an important role when it comes to watching TVs. Plus, brightness gains more importance when one wants to watch TV in a well-lit room.

When comparing the brightness level and watching experience in a well-lit room, QLED TVs seem to win the battle. Because of QLED super charged nanoparticles, the screen can be brighter than ever before. More amazingly, you won’t lose colour saturation at a high brightness level. QLED TVs’ brightness level is fair enough for HDR content.

On the other hand, OLED TVs can’t compete with the QLED TV in their brightness level.

Contrast and Black Level:

Before declaring the winner in contrast and black level competition, it would be better to know about contrast level. In simple words, the contrast level of any TV can be determined by the difference between the darkest part and the brightest part of an image.

In old LCDs, the dark part of an image couldn’t be turned into the dark black portion; therefore, bright portions of an image were made brighter to gain the desired contrast ratio. It was a good technique in the old days, but it loses colour saturation.

On the other hand, the tiny pixels in OLED get turned off when creating a dark black part in an image. It means that OLED TVs create a truly black dark portion. By doing so, there is no need to make the bright parts of an image brighter. So, OLED gives you better image results with perfect colour saturation.

Price:

The price might be the last factor that places OLED and QLED TVs poles apart. Initially, OLED TVs were the most expensive TVs in the market. However, the prices of OLED TVs gradually come down, thanks to the competitive market.

Nevertheless, when we compare the price of OLED with the cost of QLED, we may observe a considerable difference. QLED TVs are cheaper than OLED TVs.

Final Verdict:

If you are looking for a big screen and have a tight budget, QLED TV will be the perfect choice for you. However, if you prefer a large screen with excellent image quality, don’t compromise less than OLED.

Besides, we have tried to explain this puzzle in simple words. If you have any questions about OLED and QLED, please ask in the comment section; our experts will try to answer your query.
